Well you all know by now that the number one destination on this trip is Mt, Rushmore. So it should come as no surprise that we found ourselves in Kennebec SD. There is a sign along the road that posses the question you all may be asking "Where the heck is Kennebec?". The whole reason for our stop here was the Lake Byre Recreational Area.
Located less than five miles off Interstate 90, this little recreation area offers free no frills camping next to a the small Lake Byre for up to 14 days.
We pitched our tent right on the beach and settled in for the night. The lake looked pretty inviting on this 90ish afternoon and I tested the waters. Refreshing is a good word for the short dip. The pebbled bottom was easy on my tender feet and the cool but not cold water was a great reprieve from the July heat.
We woke in morning to find another traveler had found his way to this haven in Kennebec. Coffee to open the eyes and breakfast to stay the rumbling beast and we broke camp and headed west. A word of caution should you ever find yourself in Kennebec. Beware the things that go bump in the night and cast shadows in the pale moonlight.
The Deer with Elk antlers may be only a shrub, but then again you never know.
From Kennebec we are C & L On The Road.
