Honey Hill

Google map of Francis Marion National
Forest

The Francis Marion National Forest is located about 30 miles north of Charleston South Carolina and located near the town of
McClellanville is a primitive campground named Honey Hill Recreation area (location is not the dot on the map). We made our base camp here for 4 days and 5 night which is the limit of our water supply and black tank capacity. Honey Hill makes a great base camp for exploring Charleston or the wildlife management areas to the north.

The Honey Hill Recreation Area is the home of a now unused fire watch tower and has a loop drive providing access to about 10 campsites. There are tables, fire rings and a composting toilet provided. No water is available and there are no trash cans in the campground. But as the saying goes, you get what you pay for and this is a free campground with a 14 day stay limit.

This was the 1st place we parked the trailer. There was very little sun for solar so the batteries dropped a little each day. On the bright side, I learned that we can last for 3 days with very little sun and not run the batteries down to damaging levels.

After moving about 25 feet there was plenty of sun and the batteries said thank you.

With the addition of the Endless Breeze fan by Fan-Tastic Vent and the Tiki torches, we had a good stay at Honey Hill. I would stay again, preferable in a cooler season.

A note for any history buffs among you. Francis Marion was know to the British during the Revolutionary war as the Swamp Fox. There was a short lived television series in the sixties and his exploits were exaggerated in The Patriot with Mel Gibson. He is known as the father of Guerilla Warfare and those type of tactics are origins of his nickname. Sources abound on the net and make for some interesting reading.

I'm off for now, still playing catch up, this wasn't supposed to become work (ha ha). We are still C & L On The Road, see you next time.
